Battle of Aljubarrota (1385)

The Battle of Aljubarrota took place near the town of Leiria on August 14, 1385. Portuguese forces under the command of King John I of Portugal and his general Nuno Alvares Pereira assisted by the English decisively defeated much larger army of John I of Castile and assured Portuguese independence. To celebrate his victory John I of Portugal ordered construction of the monastery of Santa Maria da Vitoria in the town of Batalha in 1388, today a UNESCO World Heritage site.
