Battle of Guadalete (711)

The Battle of Guadalete which took place near Medina Sidonia or Jerez de la Frontera in 711 was fought between the Visigoths led by their king Roderick and the Muslim invaders of the Iberian Peninsula under leadership of Tarik ibn Ziyad. Tarik’s forces decisively defeated the Visigoths and conquered almost whole Iberian Peninsula over the next seven years. Roderick was probably killed in the battle, while the death of the last Visigothic king Roderick became a source of many legends.
