Battle of Klokotnitsa (1230)

The Battle of Klokotnitsa was fought on March 9, 1230. The forces of Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Asen II defeated the army of Epirus and captured their commander and ruler Theodore Comnenus Ducas who has been held prisoner by the Bulgarians for 7 years. The Despotate of Epirus was made a Bulgarian vassal state and was eliminated from the contest for the restoration of the Byzantine Empire, while Ivan Asen II occupied all of western Thrace, Macedonia and northern Albania making the Bulgarian Empire the leading power of the Balkan Peninsula.
