Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa by F. P. Van Halen

Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa

The Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa which took place on July 16, 1212, is widely considered as a decisive battle in the history of the Reconquista. Allied forces of Christian kingdoms of Castile, Aragon, Navarre and Portugal supported by the Crusaders decisively defeated the Almohads, a Muslim dynasty which ruled southern Iberia. Over the following decades the Christian kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula captured almost all of southern Spain from the Muslims who retained only Granada and the very southern coast of Spain.
