The Battle of Manzikert was fought between the Byzantines under the command of Romanus IV Diogenes and Seljuk Turks led by Sultan Alp Arslan in 1071. The outcome of the battle was a decisive victory of the Seljuk Turks, while Byzantine Emperor was taken captive. The Byzantine defeat at the Battle of Manzikert is widely considered as the beginning of the end of the Byzantine Empire as a military power. The Seljuks occupied most of Anatolia iommediately after the battle, conquered Asia Minor within few years and established the Sultanate of Rum.
