Battle of Morgarten (1315)
The Battle of Morgarten took place at Morgarten Pass on the border of Schwyz and Zug cantons in Switzerland on November 15, 1315. The Swiss Confederates Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden decisively defeated the army of knights led by Duke Leopold of Austria who claimed jurisdiction in the area. After the battle, the confederates reached an agreement over their unification which formed the legal basis of the Swiss Confederacy for the following five centuries. Swiss victory in the Battle of Morgarten in 1315 also marked the rise of the Swiss eidgenossen (oat brothers) whose mercenary services were later intensively sought by all European great powers.
