The Battle of Muret took place near Toulouse in 1213. The forces of Simon de Montfort, 5th Earl of Leicester defeated the army of Peter II of Aragon and Raymond VI of Toulouse. Peter II was slain in the battle, while Raymond VI was forced into exile in England and to cede Toulouse and Montauban to Simon the Montfort who was proclaimed Count of Toulouse, Viscount of Beziers and Carcassonne, and Duke of Narbone. His titles were confirmed by pope at the Fourth Lateran Council in 1215.
