Battle of Nicopolis (1396)

The Battle of Nicopolis was fought between the Ottoman army led by Sultan Bayezid I and allied Christian forces under leadership of King Sigismund of Hungary on September 25, 1396. The battle also known as the Crusade of Nicopolis resulted in severe defeat of the Crusader army. The Turks slaughtered the majority of the Western knights, while Sigismund managed to escape. The defeat in the Battle of Nicopolis ended the Christian efforts to stop the Ottoman expansion in the Balkans and Central Europe.
