Bartolomeo Colleoni (c. 1400 – 1475)
Bartolomeo Colleoni was an Italian condottiero, mercenary leader who fought for money. He fought in wars between Venice and Milan often changing sides. However, he fought for Venice from 1454 until his death and was named captain-general for life. An equestrian statue was erected in his honor after his death in 1475 but not in the Piazza San Marco as he wished but opposite to the Hospital of St. Mark.
