Robin Hood and Maid Marion by Mike Cline, 1912

Robin Hood, the legendary hero of Medieval England who robbed the rich, helped the poor and fought against injustice is according to some scholars based on a real person – a knight from the 12th century who was born in Locksley, Nottinghamshire, while some believe that the story of Robin Hood was inspired by Robert, Earl of Huntingdon. The story of a “noble” robber knight and his band of fellow outlawed yeomen from the Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire became subject of numerous tales, ballads, plays as well as movies and television series.
