Siege of Rhodes (1480)
The Siege of Rhodes took place from May to July 28, 1480. About 500 Knights Hospitaller or Knights of Rhodes (later known as the Knights of Malta) and 4000 soldiers under command of Grand Master Pierre d’Aubusson managed to repulse the attacks of the Ottoman army which numbered about 70,000 men. However, the Ottoman Empire eventually became too strong and the Knights Hospitaller that held the island since 1309 were forced to cede Rhodes to the Ottomans by 1522.
