Gothic War (535 – 554)
The Gothic War was fought between the Byzantine Empire and the Ostrogothic Kingdom of Italy in Italy, Dalmatia, Sardinia, Sicily and Corsica from 535 to 554.Gothic War is considered a part of Justinian’s (Byzantine Emperor Justinian I) wars of re-conquest of former lands of the Western Roman Empire. The Gothic War is commonly divided into two phases:
- the First Gothic War (535-540) which ended with the fall of Ravenna and Byzantine victory over Ostrogoths
- and the Second Gothic War (540/41-553) which resulted in the final collapse of the Ostrogothic Kingdom of Italy. Italy came under Byzantine rule until 568 when the Byzantines were unable to repulse the invasion of the Lombards.
